A bralette can be the perfect option for warmer months, offering support for your activewear style or even embracing the ‘underwear as outerwear’ trend. But that got us thinking, what exactly makes a bralette a bralette rather than just a regular bra or crop top? We are here to unpick this. Check out our collection at the bottom of this page for our top picks of plus-size bralettes right here on Insyze or read about our fave crop hoodies and crop top outfits also on the blog.
What is a bralette
A bralette is basically a particular type of crop top. It’s a gorgeous hybrid between a sports bra and lace bra - without the annoying hook and eye closure. Whilst lots of bralettes are pull-ons, all of them are super comfy!
What’s the difference between a bra and a bralette
The main difference between a bralette and a bra is structure. The less structured bralette normally has a more natural shape because it is lined rather than being padded.
Meanwhile, bras are padded to give more shaping and support. You can also get bras as either wired or unwired whilst bralettes are mostly unwired.
On those days where you want to look super polished and feel supported go with a bra but if for a more casual, laid-back style or those ‘no-bra’ days - chose a bralette. Bralettes are a go-to style for active wear!
Do you have to wear a bra under a bralette?
Nope. A great bralette gives you the support you need to ditch the bra! But if you are worried about nipple coverage at all then try stick-ons.
How to wear a bralette
Wear a bralette just like you would with any other bra. Or, wear it as a top and lay it with a shacket, kimono, and high-waisted jeans. There are literally tons of ways that you can style a plus-size bralette. Here are just a few of our faves:
5 Ways to style a bralette
Under a slouchy knit
Go for a peekaboo style by wearing a bralette underneath an oversized jumper or waterfall cardigan. Wear it off the shoulders and to show off those cute bralette straps.
With high waisted jeans
We love a high waistline and know you do too. They are super flattering for all body shapes and look amazing paired with a bralette. - Cropped leather jacket totally optional.
Under a sheer top
Seen a gorgeous sheer top tht you just have to have but are worried about modesty and showing off your underwear? Wear a bralette under it! Choose a plain style so your top can be the showstopper or go for a complimenting pattern for a coordinated style.
With a kimono
Layering a bralette never looked so cute worn with a tropical print or boho kimono. They instantly elevate you look, giving you a sophisticated style.
With a maxi skirt
The maxi skirt and bralette matching set is a must-have for summer and we are loving how the crop top and long skirt combo compliments each other and plays with different lengths.
Under a backless dress
If like me, tit tape or stick-on nipple covers fill you with dread, you probably avoid backless dresses like the plague. Bralettes take all the stress away by giving you a super cute option of what to wear underneath your backless dress. The different nude tones from Proclaim would be perfect for this!
