How to Dress a Plus-Size Apple Shape Body

Knowing how to dress for your body shape is like having a super power and is a sure way to elevate your look, no matter your size. We normally think about the Apple or O body shape as having a larger top or mid section - think belly, broad shoulders and large bust. In this blog we want to share our top tips for how to dress a plus-size apple shape. From finding a super cute skater dress to discovering your next pair of favorite jeans, see what styles will look incredible for your shape.

P.S. The tips that we share are just guidelines. All you need to look and feel great is confidence! Check out more great style guides from Insyze including if there are plus size options at Zara and an in depth look at the best dresses for an Apple shaped body.

Dresses for the Plus-Size Apple Shape

When picking out a dress for your body shape it’s all about making it look like your waist is not where your natural waist is. Dropped hems, empire lines and full skirts are perfect for this. Some of our favorite styles for Apples include:

Wrap Styles

These give definition to your waistline, or you can tie the wrap just below your bust to give the illusion of a higher waistline.

Swing or Fit and Flare Dresses

Retro styles like swing dresses with full circle skirts are a winner for the Apple body shape as they balance out your silhouette.

Skater Dresses

Just like swing styles, skater dresses can have the same effect. Choose dresses with V or plunging necklines to draw the eye-line down.

Try to avoid super clingy fabrics or dresses with high or halter necks as these attract attention to areas that you might not be wanting to highlight or make you feel self conscious.

Best Tops for the Apple Body Shape

Wrap Tops

Wraps literally can do no wrong when it comes to dressing for a plus-size apple shape and we love that they are a super comfy option too. We recommend choosing v- necks and darker shades.

Blouses

Look for v-neck styles, or if it’s a classic button front that you are after, consider leaving the top button (or two) undone. Another great tip for blouses is to choose styles without too much going on the top section like beading or ruffles.

Tunics

A classic tunic and leggings combo is a go-to for lots of plus-size Apple shapes as the longer length of this style skims over any wobbly areas you might be feeling a bit subconscious about.

The key to choosing the perfect top for an Apple or letter O body is to get the fit right. A super baggy or too tight top that just doesn’t fit is only going to draw attention to your upper body.

Knitwear and Jackets

We love to layer our style anytime of the year and for the Apple body shape, longer styles like waterfall cardigans are not just super cozy, but are also a great way of skimming over your mid-section. Look for flowy coats like trench and dusters that have a single breasted front.

Blazers, cropped styles and jackets that fall at the waist can make you look boxy and cut you in half.

Skirts and Pants for Apples

Show off your gorgeous legs by rocking an A-line or skater skirt. Don’t be afraid to give that mini skirt you’ve had your eye on a try - we already know that you will look amazing!

Tapered jeans or pants can make you look ‘top heavy,’ so unless that is the look you want to go for, they should be avoided. Instead look for bootcut or straight leg fits.

Whatever your style, look out for pants or skirts that are pull-on or have a side zip. It's not just more flattering but actually more comfortable too!
